![]() ![]() ![]() For fifteen years he has been working in Italy, which has allowed him to create a multidimensional, fascinating and sometimes surprising portrait of the inhabitants of the Apennine Peninsula. John Hooper writes about the people of Italy with sympathy, but not uncritically. Full of fascinating and often funny insights, unavailable in guides "Italians" will surprise even the most devoted lovers of Italy. Hooper, who spent 15 years in Rome as a foreign correspondent, convincingly demonstrates the influence of geography, history and tradition on many aspects of Italian life, including football, freemasonry, sex, food and opera. John Hooper's funny and insightful book is the perfect reading for anyone who tries to understand modern Italy and the unique character of its people. How could a nation that gave birth to the Renaissance also create a mafia? And why does the Italian language know twelve terms for a hanger, but not a single one for a hangover? ![]()

![]() Up until one of The Others stole his memories at least. Unravelling a reverie is dangerous work undertaken by The Others, a team that uses their individual powers to run the reverie to its conclusion, and was apparently run by… Kane. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, as any tiny mistake can spiral the reverie through a dangerous plot twist, and turn it from daydream to nightmare. ![]() Each reverie is highly personal, a person’s most private fantasies made real, and once they come into being they can only be unravelled and the souls within them freed by bringing the story to its resolution. The stated aim of The Social Contract is to determine whether there can be a legitimate political authority, since peoples interactions he saw at his time seemed to put them in a state far worse than the good one they were at the state of nature, even though living in isolation. ![]() And so, while Rousseaus Discourse treats human nature, his follow-up works Emile and On the Social Contract (both published in 1762) explore the sort of education and political order best suited to this nature. The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate as Rousseau asserts, only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful right. Like Plato and Machiavelli before him, Rousseau refused to separate concerns of politics and ethics from those of education. The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in France. The Social Contract, or Principles of Political Right by Jean-Jacques Rousseau is a book in which Rousseau theorized about the best way to establish a political community in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his Discourse on Inequality (1754).
